I know haters are bound to hate, and I assure you that I would love to confirm false reports that fifty thousand protesters had shown up (good job perpetuating that one @anonops), but that simply wasn't the case. There was at most two thousand people there at the peak of the event yesterday, and there was never more than one thousand protesters in any single location at the same time. When you account for the fact that half the people there traveled from outside of NYC, honestly I'd say that's a pretty sad showing of class consciousness from a city of our size. A city with the revolutionary history and unemployment rates of New York really ought to produce more people to protest the abuses of Wall Street than to attend a Bright Eyes show.
There were some awesome things I saw. The diversity of views and opinions at the protest were encouraging. I spoke with anarchists, anons, socialists, Christians, labor activists, and even a Ron Paul supporter. Too often these protests represent such a narrow sliver of the political left that it's impossible to ever imagine any kind of popular sentiment arising from the discourse. This could and should have been a huge asset to the demonstration, however the diversity of organizations and opinions were wasted without a coherent, tangible goal.
